Student Success Workshop Counseling Department Summer 2010

What you will learn: The definition of: Academic Probation Progress Probation Disqualification

What is a student in good standing? A student who has attempted 12 or more units and has earned a 2.0 or above A Student who has completed more than 50% of the courses attempted with 12 or more units

Academic Standing A student who is not in good academic standing will have a hold placed on his/her record until he/she attends an online or in person Student Success Workshop. The hold will prevent registration.

Remember: By successfully completing this workshop and earning at least a 70% on the quiz will only clear the registration hold for the current semester. You will need to complete this workshop EVERY semester until you are in good standing.

How to Calculate Your Grade Point Average (GPA) First calculate grade points. A=4,B=3,C=2,D=1,F=0 Multiply grade points by number of units the class is worth. Take total grade points and divide by number of units you are enrolled in.

Example Course Units Grade Grade Points Grade Points x Units Math B22 (5) A5x4*20 History B17A (3) B3x3* 9 English B1 (4) C 4x2* 8 Art B2AB(3) A 3x4* 12 Total Total Grade Points 15 Total Units 49 divided by 15 = 3.26 Grade Points- A=4*, B=*3, C*=2, D*=1, F*=0 * grade points

Grade Point Average Calculation For more help calculating your grade point average, go to this informative website:

Academic Probation Attempted 12 or more units and earned a cumulative grade point average below 2.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average includes all coursework taken at BC

How do I get off Academic probation?

Repeating courses you failed is the quickest way to get back into good standing BC allows students to register a second time for a course. You must file a Course Repeat Form with the Admissions office once you have earned a “C” grade or higher after repeating the course (you printed this form at the beginning of the workshop)

For every unit of “F” grades, you must earn a unit of “A” grades For every unit of “D” grades, you must earn a unit of “B” grades

Repeat Policies for Special Student Populations EOP&S students need to go to their EOPS counselor or advisor for advice about repeating courses. Veterans need to check with Linda Cordoba in the Admissions office about possible repeat restrictions. DSPS students should go to the DSPS department to get information about repeating courses.

Three time Repeat Policy If you fail or withdraw from the same class twice, you must obtain the department chairperson’s signature on the Request to Complete a Course Beyond the Limit form. This form can be found at: /admissions/forms/repetition.asp

IMPORTANT You will only get three chances to repeat a class.

Progress Probation If the percentage of all units attempted reaches or exceeds 50% of “W”, “I” and/or “NP” “NC entries after completing 12 or more, the student will be placed on Progress Probation.

Example Progress Probation Math B22 (5) A History B17a (3) W English B1 (4) W Art B2ab (3) W Total units of W, 5 units passed GPA = 4.0

Remember: Student’s must pass at least 51% of the units they attempt to stay in good standing.

How do I get off Progress Probation? Complete % of all courses you attempt Know where to find important drop/withdrawal dates Remember that “W’s” never go away Earn more graded units than you have units of “W’s”

For a list of important dates go to the BC Home page, See your instructor for Drop/Withdrawal dates for short term classes.

Academic Disqualification Students placed on academic probation for three consecutive semesters of enrollment, shall be disqualified for admission to classes the following semester, unless during the last semester of enrollment the student earned a 2.0 or higher, in which case, the student shall be place on continued probation.

Progress Disqualification Students who are placed on progress probation for 3 consecutive semesters of enrollment shall be disqualified for admission to classes the following semester, unless during the last semester of enrollment, the percentage of units with entries of “W”, “I” “NC” or “NP” was less than 50%, in which case the student shall be place on continued probation.

Reinstatement Policy Disqualified Students All disqualified students must attend a face to face Disqualification Workshop. Contact the Counseling department for more information on workshop dates and times ( ) Depending on individual circumstances, you may be asked to sit out for a semester

Academic Renewal Maximum of 20 units of substandard grades (D, F, NC or NP) may be disregarded in the calculation of the g.p.a., for courses taken at Bakersfield College under the following conditions : (refer to the current BC catalog for more information) 5 years have elapsed 12 units of satisfactory grades were earned Academic Renewal form is completed and submitted to Admissions and Records Click below for the Academic Renewal form: st.pdf

By taking this workshop and passing the quiz with at least a 70% pass rate and completing an online update for the next semester, the hold on your registration will be lifted in order that you may register.

Important You must complete an online or face to face probation workshop every semester until you are in good standing. Good standing is defined as a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher AND completion of at least 51% of the units you attempt.

What are the consequences of probation? Students on academic or progress probation will have a registration and unit hold placed on their student record each semester until they are back in good standing.

Other Consequences of Probation Visit the Financial Aid office to see if your probationary status will effect your aid. If you are a student athlete, see the Athletic advisor in the gym for eligibility status.
