Why Monitor Vibration? ■ Predictive maintenance ■ Vibration is often the result of components that are: –Imbalanced –Misaligned –Worn –Loose –Improperly driven ■ Detecting increased vibration early helps reduce machine damage and avoid failures ■ Monitoring vibration reduces downtime –Plan maintenance more efficiently ■ Monitor machine run time

Vibration Measurements ■ Displacement, velocity and acceleration can be measured to monitor vibration –Displacement = distance moved –Velocity = speed of movement –Acceleration = rate of change in speed

Vibration Measurements ■ Velocity is the best measure of vibration because it mutes frequency dependent effects

Vibration Measurements ■ The QM42VT1 uses an FFT to convert the vibration signal from a time domain to a frequency domain in order to calculate the velocity

Vibration Measurements RMS Velocity ■ RMS (root-mean-square) is in essence an averaging operation that conveys the effective energy within a signal ■ RMS velocity is the most common and effective measure of machine vibration severity in rotating equipment. –It is an indication of the vibration energy produced by the machine –It is expressed in inches per second (in/s) or millimeters per second (mm/s)

■ The Banner QM42VT1 uses a MEMS based accelerometer as its core sensing element for vibration ■ It uses advanced signal processing techniques to output a digital signal that represents a true RMS velocity between 10 and 1,000 Hz. Vibration Measurements

Set Alarm Levels ■ The ISO vibration severity chart is a well established standard that is based on historical machine vibration data. ■ It defines acceptable limits of vibration severity, using RMS velocity, and can be used to set vibration alarm levels. ■ Temperature alarms can be set up to 80°C
