Children whispered to each other, perhaps about the film or other things that children whisper about. Most people didn’t turn away; they barely blinked. They all cheered at the miracles of Jesus and cried for his suffering and death. Fortunately, they were given the opportunity to cheer again, and even dance and sing because of his resurrection. Around 50 people accepted the Lord that evening, but we didn’t expect the pleading, almost begging, that came next. “We are all alone here, without churches or pastors or bibles. There is no one to teach our children about God. Please come back, don’t leave us here alone.”

Believing Jesus called us to be peacemakers, we must affirm the need for our church to work and pray for peace in the region. Pray for peace in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, for a just and lasting solution that allows all people to live with dignity and respect in the absence of violence. Pray for the comfort of those who have lost family members and friends.

Genesis 16 (NIV) Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2 so she said to Abram, “The L ORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.” Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.

Genesis 16 (NIV) When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the L ORD judge between you and me.” 6 “Your slave is in your hands,” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.

Tired of Waiting How would you describe each character in this episode in a word or phrase? How would you describe each character in this episode in a word or phrase? What was the motivation of each? What was the motivation of each? What were they feeling? What were they feeling? What was their view of God? What was their view of God? Would you act differently? Would you act differently? How long are we prepared to wait on God? How long are we prepared to wait on God?

Genesis 16 (NIV) 7 The angel of the L ORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered. 9 Then the angel of the L ORD told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”

Genesis 16 (NIV) 11 The angel of the L ORD also said to her: “You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the L ORD has heard of your misery. 12 He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him,and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.” 11 The angel of the L ORD also said to her: “You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the L ORD has heard of your misery. 12 He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him,and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”

A Message from Heaven What was Hagar’s plan? How did the plan change? What did Hagar learn? How does Romans 8:28 apply?

Genesis 16 (NIV) 13 She gave this name to the L ORD who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” 14 That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered. 13 She gave this name to the L ORD who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” 14 That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered. 15 So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael. 15 So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

A Covenant God What do you learn about Abram in this episode? What do you learn about Abram in this episode? What do you think Abram learned? What do you think Abram learned? What did Sarai learn? What did Sarai learn? What did Hagar learn? What did Hagar learn? Why does Paul use this episode in Galations 4:21-31? Why does Paul use this episode in Galations 4:21-31?
