How the idea was born Ann Milton, Diabetes Wellness Program Manager and myself were brainstorming and eventually hit upon the idea of combining a tsunami evacuation training walk and diabetes education. The idea evolved during the summer until we had also included the nutrition program and the Planning Department in the planning, funding and execution of the event.

The first job was to get all the yellow brick road signs placed in both Taholah and Queets The tee shirt design started as a brainstorming session We decided on: I Walked the Route and the Tsunami evacuation route graphic surrounded by Quinault Nation and Tsunami Challenge 2011

To receive a T shirt, a person must have at least four stamps from the stations along the route. Each station provided either equipment to start an emergency pack and/or information. One comical aspect that was brought to our attention was at one station we were providing flashlights and colon cancer information.

I Walked the Route Passport You must get 4 or more stamps for your t-shirt Station #1 Community Center Family sign-up tsunami map & duffel Station #2 Fitness Center Bottled water & granola bars Station #3 Senior Center Hand sanitizer & reflectors Station #4 DV/DPP Building Medication lists & pill dispensers Station #5 Across from school Breast Cancer info. & comfort kits Station #6 Lighthouse Church Road Men’s health, colon cancer info. & flashlights Station #7 In front of HR by Tribal Office Tsunami info. & space blankets Station #8 Meeting Area QDNR T-Shirt & Passport turn in I Walked the Route Passport

Funding for the event Funding came from a number of sources Roger Saux Health Center Environmental Health Planning paid for the T-shirts Work time was donated by the various departments for the volunteers to be able to help with the event

Taholah: 122 people turned in their passports 36 children from the daycare; either walked, were pushed up in the evacuation cradle or rode in the 6 kid strollers, 41 people were over 50 Queets: 103 participants started and completed the walk 55 adult community and family members 17 head start children 31 Queets-Clearwater School Students

The final station in Taholah was the BBQ We had fresh veggies, watermelon, cantaloupe, fruit salad and hamburgers A number of people spent the day before and the day of the event prepping the food. In Queets we supplied Subway sandwiches and fresh fruit.

The Yellow Brick Road signs are simple signs used for directing walking traffic. These signs can be used for other than tsunami events Can be used in buildings as a simple route marker for evacuation. Even young children can follow the yellow brick road signs
