DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Charting the Integration of Ethics in the Business Curriculum David Turi Beth Castiglia Division of Business and Management Sciences Felician College

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Business Ethics at Felician College Mission Statement Felician College is an independent co-educational Catholic/Franciscan College founded and sponsored by the Felician Sisters to educate a diverse population of students within the framework of a liberal arts tradition. Its mission is to provide a full complement of learning experiences, reinforced with strong academic and student development programs designed to bring students to their highest potential and prepare them to meet the challenges of the new century with informed minds and understanding hearts. “The enduring purpose of Felician College is to promote a love for learning, a desire for God, self- knowledge, service to others, and respect for all creation.”

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Business Ethics at Felician College Vision Statement To be a pre-eminent Catholic Franciscan College where scholarship and the practice of teaching and learning place students first in the enduring quest for truth and the persistent pursuit of competence, character, and compassion.

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Ethics at Felician College “A great society is a society in which men (women) of business think greatly of their functions.” Alfred North Whitehead

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Focus on Core Competencies Core objective to be met by each course in our Business Core and Major Requirements include the following competency: Critical Reasoning Effective Communication Ethical Decision-Making Quantitative Literacy Teamwork Personal Responsibility

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Business Ethics at Felician College Relevance as it relates to our mission. Relevance as it relates to business. Relevance as it relates to society.

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Business Ethics at Felician College Felician College does require all business students in their Junior year to take a 300 level course, “Ethics in the Corporate Environment” as part of the business core. Exclusive reliance on one required course is institutionally and pedagogically misguided. This Ethics course is used as an assessment course before student graduate.

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Introduction Business Ethics at Felician College Ethics in the Corporate Environment – Required Course Case Study Method JD or CPA Faculty. DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Curriculum Mapping and Assessment Charting Learning Outcomes Charting Student Learning Outcomes

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Assessment Tools and Data Ethics Infused in MBA. Business Core Assessment. Capstone undergraduate assessment.

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Teaching Strategy How to integrate Ethics in to curriculum? Experiential approach. Faculty as facilitator.

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Faith-Based Institutions Whose Ethics? Shared values? Faculty/Student comfort levels.

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Conclusion Students recognize the importance of ethics and ethical issues and appear to be willing to take courses in ethics. At a minimum, they recognize the need to discuss ethics within each of their courses. We also conclude that students want programs that teach them how to handle problematic ethical situations and how to avoid becoming involved in them in the first place. Just as business students need to develop tools and skills to aid them in the decision-making process in management or marketing, they also need tools and skills for ethical decision making.

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT SCIENCES ` Conclusion Through our research, we believe that the inclusion of ethics in the business curriculum needs to be tackled in two ways: As the topic of a stand-alone course, which is part of the business core requirements, and Integrated within all courses, allowing students to see how ethics relates to specific academic topics.
