supporting the seafood industry for a sustainable, profitable future Background Project objective was to source and test a cost effective VMS applicable to inshore vessel The project went to tender and Cybit Bluefinger was commissioned to supply the units The project involves 5 vessels using 2 separate systems TDMA (VHF) system GPRS (Mobile phone) system Accessible via the internet using Bluefinger’s Saffire-online software
supporting the seafood industry for a sustainable, profitable future The Tracking Systems Both systems have an internal GPS system that monitors the vessel position. This position is then transmitted via either the TDMA or GPRS communications system System costs vary TDMA approximately £2,000 per vessel GPRS approx £600 per vessel + £15 p.m. transmission costs These costs relate to the pilot project and would be expected to be reduced for larger numbers of vessels.
supporting the seafood industry for a sustainable, profitable future TDMA (VHF) System TDMA (VHF) – 2 Shore based transceiver stations one at the Lizard lighthouse the other in Newlyn. The signal is received from the vessels via one of these stations every second. Then transmitted to the Saffire-online by the base station in Newlyn using an internet link. Pro’s – No transmission costs after initial capital purchase Independent system Con’s Signals are only recorded when the vessel has reception from a shore station & base station is operative
supporting the seafood industry for a sustainable, profitable future GPRS (Mobile Phone) System This system uses the mobile phone network (O2) to receive the data which is then received by the Saffire-online software Pro’s No shore based communications network needs to be setup System still logs the vessels position when not in range Low cost Con’s Dependant on the mobile phone network Ongoing transmission costs
supporting the seafood industry for a sustainable, profitable future Saffire-Online Internet based package Developed as a sea-based option to the successful fleetstar- online road based system Newly developed – still going teething problems System provides Vessels current and historic positions on charting software Can produce and export vessel logs in Excel and PDF format Displays vessel tracks on charts Real-time monitoring of vessel position
