WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE:He is recognised as the best English playwright and poet.He is the most widely quoted author in history. His plays are divided into four groups. a)History b)comedy c)tragedy d)tragi-comedy

INTRODUCTION OF THE PLAY- JULIUS CAESAR Caesar grows in power and the Senators plot to kill him out of jealousy.Caesar falls prey to the plot of the conspirators. Marcus Brutus, Caesar’s loyal friend is made an instrument to fulfil the lusty wish. Mark Antony becomes emotional at Caesar’s death and gives an emotional speech to influence the Roman public for revenge.

GIST OF ANTONY’S SPEECH Antony pretends to be with the conspirators and is offered a position in the Commonwealth. He wins the heart of the Roman public with his oratory. He makes a famous funeral speech and excites the emotions of the listeners. He understands the psychology of the mob. He does not talk of the principle of freedom but about Ceasar’s wounds and the ingratitude of Brutus. He cleverly turns the tide in favour of Caesar.

Salient points of Antony’s speech Antony: Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears.I come to bury Caesar not to praise him. The noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious. If it were so, it was a grievous fault and grievously hath answered it. He was my friend, faithful and just to me. He hath brought many captives home to Rome whose ransom did the general coffers fill:did this in Caesar seem ambitious?

VALUE POINTS in Antony’s speech: True friend Sincerity and truthfulness Purity of mind and action Social welfare, understanding real politics
