History of cosmetics By: Erica Farfan

Why women use make-up We dot it for ourselves- women put on makeup for themselves. It makes them extra confident about themselves.

It corrects things that we can’t correct ourselves if you have a pimple on your nose, you would put on concealer to hide it. Or if you look pale you would put on some blush. Women put on makeup to conceal anything like zits, blotchiness, and blackheads.

It makes them feel young and beautiful They want to look good, they believe that they feel good with it on, and they don’t want to feel ugly without makeup on.

When it was first invented It was first invented by the ancient Egyptians in 10,000 bce

How different countries use makeup Men and women in Egypt would use scented oils and ointments to clean and soften their skin, and mask body odor. Oils and creams were used to protect their skin from the hot sun, and dry winds in Egypt. Most of the ingredients used were myrrh, thyme, lavender, lily, peppermint, rosemary, rose, aloe, olive oil, sesame moil, and almond oil Around 4,000 bce the Egyptian women wore copper and ore around their eyes to make their eyes stand out They would also put malachite (a mixture of copper minerals) on their cheeks, and kohl became the main products for lining their eyes.

Between 3,000 bce and 1500 bce Chinese women would stain their fingernails with gun, beeswax, and egg. The colors would represent social class- Chou dynasty royals wore gold and silver Subsequent royals wore black and red Lower classes were forbidden to wear bright colors on their nails

Greeks, Japanese, and Chinese women would whiten their faces too The Chinese and Japanese would use rice powder The greeks would use white lead and apply berries on their cheeks as rouge

100 ad Romans used butter and barely powder to get rid of pimples. They would use sheep fat and blood to paint their nails Mud baths became really popular, and some roman men would dye their hair blonde. Around 300 ad Indians began using henna as a way to dye their hair, and as a religious decorating of their body

1400s In England it was popular for women to dye their hair red or to wear egg whites on their face to whiten it Women used products that were actually a risk to their health to lighten their skin Blonde hair became the most popular because it kind of showed its angelic appearance

today Today, now makeup is used in fashion, hair styles, and changing lifestyles. Makeup was the foundation for fashion especially Makeup is used to source, manufacture, package, and market products.
