Ashley Heights Ward March 29, 2009 Our ability to serve is diminished or increased by our level of Self-reliance. “Spiritual Guidance cannot come from the spiritually weak.” Now is the time to lay the building blocks for the foundation of Welfare in our lives in our homes and with our children.

 We are often blessed with help from others during our trials  We are often blessed with help from others during our trials. Priesthood blessings, food, shelter, money. Priesthood blessings, food, shelter, money.  In Challenging times, when many are in need, resources will not be adequate for all those who stand in need.  The Lord has taught us to provide for our own needs and not rely on the good nature of others.

 We have been counseled about being prepared for the coming “Stormy Weather”.  It is our responsibility to prepare our families to deal with hardships ahead of time so when they do come, We can meet them head-on. “If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear!!!”

 Keep a list of important information & phone numbers in an obvious location.  Make the list understandable from a stranger’s perspective.  What if a paramedic is trying to make sense of it?  See the following example:

 First Priority (According to First Presidency)  Food you Normally Eat.  Food that needs No Refrigeration.  Food that can be eaten with little or No Cooking. (Not your Long Term Food Storage)  Rotation!  Don’t Go into Debt to buy your food Storage.  Buy a few extra cans each time you go to the store  Consider keeping your Food Storage Separate from other foods. (Inventory Control)  Buy foods when they are on sale:

 What if your water is not enough? Or water is contaminated?  Plan on means to treat water, and Practice!

 Warm Food Is the Best Morale Booster!  Plan on methods to cook your 90-Day Food Supply. Like:  Extra Propane for your BBQ….

 A collection of items you can use to keep warm, dry, fed and hydrated and treat minor injuries following a disaster.  Portable so you can take it with you.  Have it always ready! You may be forced to leave in as little as 5 minutes.

 After a disaster, water & sewage lines may be disrupted. Earthquakes, floods and mudslides can break sewage and water lines.  Power outages: Water and sewer lines are dependant on electricity to run their pumps.  When Water/Sewer lines are down, Sanitation can become a serious problem…Very Quickly!  When Water/Sewer lines are down, Sanitation can become a serious problem…Very Quickly!  "People affected by disasters are more likely to become ill and to die from diseases related to inadequate sanitation and water supplies than from any other single cause." (World Health Organization)  As much as possible, continue regular hygiene habits. This will help prevent the spread of disease and irritation as well as help relieve stress.

 Prepare a Sanitation Kit that can be used at home and portable so it can go with you if you need to evacuate  Add some garbage bags as liners, toilet paper and other hygiene items like hand sanitizer, feminine supplies, baby wipes and a folding shovel into the bucket and you have a great solution to this serious need.
