Definition of “Learner-Centered”: (American Psychological Association) The perspective that couples a focus on individual learners with a focus on learning ─ how it occurs and about teaching practices that are most effective in promoting the highest levels of motivation, learning, and achievement for all learners.

Your first activity…. Work with your colleagues at your tables to complete these sentences. In learner-centered classrooms, 1.the students… 2.the instructor… 3.the instructional strategies and methods … 4.the assessment of student learning is … You have ___ minutes for this task.

Goals for an assessment portfolio Given a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, what should the overarching goals be for an assessment portfolio? Shavelson and Huang (2003) provided a thoughtful analysis of assessment in higher education that included six propositions.2003

Shavelson and Huang’s (2003) propositions 1.Assessment of personal, social, and civic abilities as well as cognitive ones 2.Real dialogue and greater agreement on the content of assessments 3.Recognition that what we test and make public will greatly influence what is taught and what is learned

Shavelson and Huang’s (2003) propositions continued 4.Clarity in the debate about what to assess through the use of a conceptual framework 5.Multiple and varied assessments meaningful feedback on assessment results to all stakeholders of the institution including 6.Students, faculty, administrators, legislators and others who support the work of the institution

The triple helix metaphor Extending the triple helix metaphor to an assessment portfolio, we argue that the three strands of learning, assessment of student learning, and pedagogy must be intertwined in the same way as a triple helix in nature. In nature, a triple helix includes three intertwined helical strands that are linked to one another through biochemical processes.

The triple helix metaphor The biochemical processes are replaced with electronic processes, but the result is the same — without the other two strands, a single strand has no real strength or meaning. An assessment portfolio can provide the means to inherently link the three strands of learning, assessment, and pedagogy

The Triple Helix Pedagogy Assessment Learning

Goals of an ePortfolio Empower students – Access all learning resources anywhere, anyplace, anytime – Work smarter and more efficiently Discover and demonstrate logical pathways to academic success Enable faculty – Partner in students’ progress – Provide rich content w/ greater ease Enrich learning experiences – Through meaningful connections between work, learning across courses and co-curricular activities.
