Renewing the Covenant The Book of Deuteronomy Ray of Hope Christian Church January 31, 2012

Deuteronomy 1:1-8 4:1-14

Jewish name for Deuteronomy is “devarim” “words” derived from the opening expression “These are the words Moses spoke to Israel”

Deuteronomy got its English name from the unfortunate mistranslation of a phrase in 17:18 “write for himself on a scroll a copy of the law”

Comes from the Greek “deuteros” meaning second and “nomos” meaning law

Deuteronomy A new generation A new possession A new experience A new revelation of God as the God of love

Deuteronomy 10:12-13 And now, O Israel, what does the Lord ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord with all your soul and observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?

The Lord Jesus requires nothing less of believers today John 14:21-23

Remember: The Lord is God 4:

He is a jealous God 5: 1-8

Idolatry is forbidden Idolatry is paying divine honor to any created thing Romans 1:23

The only safe recourse for the Israelites was separation and annihilation 7:1-6;16

Idolatry was a transgression of the Covenant 17:2-5

Deuteronomy 29:17; 32:16

Figuratively speaking, the term idolatry is used to describe “covetousness” which takes mammon for its god Ephesians 5:5, Colossians 3:5

Appetite and gluttony is also included under idolatry Philippians 3:19; Romans 16:18; II Timothy 3:4

The final key is being successful in their covenant relationship with God was to Love the Lord their God with all their heart 6:4-6
