Wawel Castle and the legend of the Wawel Dragon The Wawel Castle (Royal Castle) is situated on the hill. Polish Royalty and many distinguished Poles are buried in the Wawel Cathedral. Since the XIX century Wawel became the leading political and administrative centre for the Polish State. Royal coronations took place in Wawel as well.

Auschwitz – Birkenau Auschwitz has become a symbol of terror, genocide, and the Holocaust. It was a site of mass murder and the biggest concentration camp established on Polish ground by the Nazis during the Second World War. At present the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum is located on the grounds of the camp. The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

Wieliczka – Salt mine The historic Salt Mine in Wieliczka is the only mining site in the world functioning continuously since the Middle Ages.
