Determining Main Idea The main idea is the “big point” or the most important idea that the writer is communicating to the reader Main Idea - is like the heart of the text or a paragraph and It is the controlling idea All the other supporting details in the text or within a paragraph should tell us more about the main idea

Determining Main Idea Many paragraphs have topic sentences that indicate the main idea. A paragraph has a stated main idea usually in the topic sentence. This means the paragraph “says” what the main idea is.
Find the topic sentence in this paragraph and Identify supporting details Homeless people have many problems. In winter, it’s hard to stay warm and it gets too hot in summer. It’s also hard to keep things safe without a home. Worst is the lack of privacy
Constructing Main Idea A whole-to-part approach 1. Use the title, headings, graphics, and apparent topic sentence to hypothesize the main idea 2. Check the hypotheses by seeing if the details support it A part-to-whole approach 1. Notice the key details 2. See how the details are related
Use the title or heading to make a hypothesis as to what the main idea is Read sentence and see whether supports the hypothesis.
