Watercolor Designs Edith Bowen 1 st grade

Intro Kids sat on rug to start lesson The class was set up with tables grouped together, about 5 kids per group Art posters and artwork covered the walls Supplies on the table, but didn’t hand out paint brushes till I was ready for them to start. (great tip) The school is a very strong art school They have an art room with a full time art teacher Each class gets 45 minutes per week, but the art teacher in working towards getting more The art teacher definitely buys in to visual arts instruction.

Objectives Through exploration students will discover how mixing primary colors make secondary colors. Students will explore the use of watercolors, and use different colors to add visual interest to their picture. Students will practice mixing primary colors to create secondary colors. Students will manipulate paint brush to add color to each shape.

Why this lesson? I thought it would be fun and exciting to do a discovery lesson with the students. I really wanted to work with paint, because it is so much fun to see how much each kid loves it. I thought the students would enjoy the lesson, and they would be excited about their finished product.

Theory vs. Practice I planned on on the lesson being more organized, with more instruction time from me on it being a little bit quieter (got much quieter when they started to paint though) …but this actual happened The lesson was more fasted passed with less time for very detailed instruction It was noisy, but it was full of excitement. (had to match their excitement) I would not chance anything about it.

Assessment Ms. Cook’s 1 st Grade Watercolor Designs

Low Why? These students explored with watercolors, but did not try and mix colors or fill in shapes separately.

Medium Why? These students explored with watercolors and filled in each space nicely, but did not try and mix colors.

High Why? These students explored with watercolors, filled in each space, and mixed colors.

Reflection- What I learned Most importantly this experience reminding me how much I love working with kids in the classroom…its been way to long I also learned to art can be so fun to teach, if I don’t let negative thoughts in my head. Kids love art!!!

Reflection-What would I change Honestly, there is not a lot I would change. The only thing I can think of is, if I had more time, I would of liked to do a tutorial of mixing colors both on the paper and in the palette.
