Week 24 Turn in: Week 23 Time Sheet (1/19 – 1/25/14) Resumé Cover Letter This Week: Week 24 Time Sheet (1/26 – 2/1/14) Thank You Letter

Informal but necessary Resume Thank You Letter

Why thank before you get the job? Many people think that the resume is the end of the job search process when in fact it is only the beginning. The thank you letter gives the prospective employee another chance to get their foot in the door and get the employer’s attention.

Keep it simple Remember, the thank you letter should be informal, but not too informal. Stick to formality in speech and names. “Gee, that was heck of cool to meet you.” Might seem to be friendly, but it could also land your resume in the trash. Many times a resume is filed away and not taken out until someone quits. The thank you letter forces someone at the prospective employer to look at your resume again (They have to file the papers away.)

The second look This is a chance to show off the fact that you can spell and use grammar well. Don’t send in any thank you letter that at least two other people have read first. It could save your job prospects!! Mis-spellings and poor grammar go straight into the trash. The people who get hired are the ones with the skills that the customers are willing to pay money for. Poor writing will not be commented on, only thrown away.

Dear Name: Thank you for the opportunity to meet with you on date of interview to discuss the position of name position. It was a pleasure visiting with you and I appreciate the additional information you supplied about the position. I am still very much interested in the position. As we discussed, I have over five years' experience in name industry and have management experience. (or whatever is relevant to the job in question). I feel that my background and qualifications are a good match for the position and the additional responsibilities that we discussed during the interview. If needed, you can add something like: In response to your concerns about accounting software, I have experience using QuickBooks, Peachtree, and PeopleSoft. I am confident I can quickly learn any new software program required for the position. I am happy to provide any additional information to assist you in your decision making process. I can be reached at the number above. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon regarding your decision. Sincerely, Your Name (PRACTICE YOUR SIGNATURE SO THAT IT LOOKS GOOD)

Presentation is everything The paper should match your resume because they will be filed together. Make sure the envelope is printed to look professional. Make sure that your signature is legible (can be read by most people). Bosses don’t like to “translate” poor writing. It wastes time and money. Taking your time to do a good job shows that you will be neat when signing the records of the business.
