Overview of Today 1.Welcome 2.Inductive Bible Study Review Observation Interpretation Application 3.Connection 4.Overview of Genesis

Preparation Find a quiet place to study Pray! Read 10 – 20 verses Read slowly and OUT LOUD! Re-read Pray!

Observation What does the text say? Listen, feel, taste, touch, smell – engage your senses Ask the ‘reporter’ questions – who, what, when, where, how? What do you see? What stands out? What do you not see? What is missing?

Practice Genesis 1:1-8 - The Beginning 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning —the first day. 6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning — the second day.

Interpretation What does the text mean to all Christians? Draw conclusions based on your observations. What are the main teachings? Universal principles? Themes? Truths? Promises? What attributes of God’s character are revealed? What does the text mean then? Now? Ask questions! Ask why?

Application What is God saying to me? Shortest and most challenging section Depends on doing Observation and Interpretation well Be still and listen This is your growth plate – naturally, it’s uncomfortable!

Application Applications should be personal, specific, time sensitive, and involve a change of thought or behavior Applications can be positive or negative Tell your small group – be accountable This is where we are transformed

Connections What’s that blank page at the end of the lesson? What do you mean “no journal”?! Stories?

Stories are important because 1.Most effective way to transmit culture, memory, history. 2.Critical role in spiritual growth and character development. 3.They have transformative power. 4.Help us discover our true identity.

Holy Spirit Space Open ended, undirected. Invitation to explore your own life. See God in the details of our lives. Extra space is for the part of the week’s lesson that resonate with you. God has written your story.

Holy Spirit Space No right or wrong way. Not expected to be polished. Not for publication. Can share or not. Don’t have to be big and profound; can be “small” stories about a moment in time. Neat and tidy vs. messy and open-ended. Allow yourself the gift of time.

Lynn’s story

Holy Spirit Space—practical tools Set aside 20 min or so. Deep breaths, relax, let go of distractions. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what story He wants you to tell. Be still, listen, pay attention to what comes into your heart and mind Explore that thought/word/picture— different forms of expression speak.

Holy Spirit Space—practical tools Remember, the point is to see God’s activity in our lives. Relax; you may get nothing. 20 min. of stillness in Holy Spirit space is a gift and a blessing.

Connection—Holy Spirit space Tell your favorite family story.
