2012 Annual Meeting Energy Efficiency Opportunities and Challenges Kathy Loftus Whole Foods Market

Buildings…Fastest Growing Energy Sector Whole Foods Market…Fast Growing Grocer Commercial buildings consume greater amounts of energy relative to other sectors and food retail among highest We’re in a growth and development mode We operate more than 300 stores—many were acquired as older, inefficient stores Operate in 40 states

Race to Reduce: 25 by 2015 Whole Foods Market has a goal to reduce our energy consumption 25% per square foot by We need your help!

What are our challenges? Costs of energy down—longer paybacks Limited time and resources in regions for scope development, project management Incentives are running dry-annual queues fill early Some utilities don’t offer programs at all-lack of continuity We can’t capitalize some projects and don’t have expense budgets for decent programs We can’t get information as readily as we’d like

What are some Opportunities? Collaborate Utilities can learn from others with proven success; focus groups with sophisticated customers Cooperate Allow customers to develop programs that deliver results; share smart grid investments Communicate Make public aware of importance of EE and successes; e.g. Energy Star, Mass Savers, etc.

NC partnered with Energy Smart Grocer and PG&E NE worked with PSEG and Emerson NE working with NREL, E2S for model 50% savings program Helpful Resources

Closing Critical Loops-Information Design impacts operation; Equipment selection impacts efficiency; Engineering impacts ongoing comfort; Maintenance impacts energy; Ultimately they’re all connected AVOID REDUCE SUBSTITUTE OFFSET

2010 Mass Saver Award!

Energy Efficiency ( and Demand Response and Distributed Generation ) delivers benefits to all and costs less than the fuel it saves! For Utilities Reduced large capital expenditures for new infrastructure Emissions reduction goals Economic development Support communities Ease restoration efforts post storm and other events For Customers Reduced costs of doing business Emissions reduction goals Growth & Development-job creation Enhanced Operations and ability to serve communities (some stores open with DG and other resources)
