The Art of Alter Reality Storytelling By: Dewayne Lee

Thesis Statement The three artists that are going to be discussed in this paper are Trenton Doyle Hancock, Jim Lee, and John Hicklenton. I chose to discuss these artists because they all use the method of Altered Reality storytelling in their works. Altered Reality is defined as a hypothetical self-contained separate reality coexisting with one’s own, and although all three of these artists use this form of storytelling, they each use it in a different way. Hancock uses this form as a personal storytelling method, Hicklenton uses it as a form of social criticism and Lee uses it to display his passion for drawing and art.

Trenton Doyle Hancock “Studio Floor Encounter with Vegans 2," 2002 Graphite and acrylic on canvas, 31 x 31 1/4 inches Form of personal storytelling. Use of color

Trenton Doyle Hancock, Torpedo Boy and Heiren Hazo, 2010, acrylic and mixed media on paper, 10 x 6 1/4 inches. Torpedo Boy is Hancock’s alter ego Personal Storytelling

John Hicklenton, “100 Months” Mixed Media. Published by cutting edge press A long book of illustrations Form of social criticism A message to the world
