Overview Mission Statement SmartSenior

Mission Statement ●Teach senior citizens how to effectively utilize their smartphones ●Reduce anxieties of using, or unwillingness to use, a smartphone ●Encourage seniors to become natural smartphone users

Representative Tasks Learning How to Tap ●Seniors aren’t comfortable with touch interfaces ●Want to present interactive interface to help gain tapping intuition

Representative Tasks Making Phone Calls ●Essential task for any phone ●Confusing due to several options ●Want to provide step-by-step tutorial for using the interface to make a call

Representative Tasks Downloading Apps from the App Store ●Extremely complex task for seniors a.Have to know how to search for apps, understand app pages, download b.What's an Apple ID? ●Want to present a contrived challenge and guide senior through solving it

Lo-fi Prototype Structure ●Hand-drawn on paper with iPhone-sized printouts ●Dialogs and other small things on smaller pieces of paper to be overlayed ●Imported into POP app

Scenarios Tapping Tutorial

Scenarios Learning Phone Calls

Scenarios Using the App Store

Experimental Method ●Who: 50+, little to no experience with smartphone, some given chocolate ●Where: Interviewed at varying places (downtown Palo Alto, hotel lobby, home) using iPad and POP app ●What: Learn how to tap, make a phone call and download an app ●How: Observed levels of understanding, areas of confusion and speed of completion

Experimental Results ●Seniors are like small children ●Impatient o Don't want to read everything ●Easily distracted o Icons! ●Forgetful o Can't remember steps

Experimental Results ●Want constant feedback o "Did I do it correctly?" o "Do I continue?"

Experimental Results ●Had trouble with small interface

Suggested UI Changes ●Reduce the amount of text presented ●Make steps more visual and interactive ●Use larger screens for tutorial This download will teach you how to download applications like games, utilities, and almost anything you can think of!

Suggested UI Changes ●Game-ify the tutorials ●Audio and haptic feedback

Summary ●Gathered lots of useful data from experiments ●Found several UI improvements that could be made
