FIRST QUARTER January – March 2009 Gerhard Pfandl - Principal Contributor John the Baptist was called by Jesus to be the greatest of all the prophets. But “the prophetic gift involved something other than writing the books of the Bible.” This Sabbath School Bible Study Guide not only introduces God’s messengers through out the ages but the also Source of all true prophecy, the ‘Gift-Giver.’

This Sabbath School lesson help was produced for the glory of God. It is being distributed through the internet media for you to use as you teach our Sabbath School classes. Please do not alter the way it was arranged. Thanks and God bless. Yours–in-Christ, Pastor N. V. Macatiag FIRST QUARTER 2009

January 31, 2009 Memory Text: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16)

January 31, 2009 Introduction God’s direct communication with humanity was cut off because of sin. For this reason, God used different modes of communication. One of these methods is making a link through the prophets. Through them, God revealed His messages that they will reach sinful man. When God used them, the Holy Spirit inspired their minds.

January 31, 2009 “God’s revelation and the inspiration of His prophets is a dynamic process. Rather than overpowering the prophet’s humanity, God embraces it with His Spirit.”

January 31, 2009 B. The Inspiration 1. Who Inspires a.“All scriptures was given by the inspirations [Gr. Theopneustos literally (Godbreathed)] of the Holy Spirit…2 Timothy 3:16 b.Second Peter 1:21 tells us that “men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (NIV).

January 31, 2009 c. “These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches” (1 Cor.2:13, NKJV), d. “When you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God” (1 Thess. 2:13, NKJV).

January 31, Who was inspired a. Second Peter 1:21 (KJV) tells us that “but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.” b. “Inspiration” refers to the Holy Spirit’s work on these messengers or prophets whether they spoke or wrote….” Handbook of SDA Theology p.34

January 31, 2009 c. The Bible though inspired by the Lord also reflects the humanness of its penmen. They were affected by the culture and the environment they lived in. i. Styles and language points to the authors’ environment and background of each book author. ii. Historical books of the Bible points to historical research of the human authors

January 31, Two Schools of Thoughts a.Verbal Inspirations – This theory focuses on the words of the Bible rather than the author. All the words are said to be inspired. Only the original copy is inspired not the copies.

January 31, 2009 b. Thought Inspirations – Inspiration here “acts not on the man’s words or on his expression but on the man himself.... The divine mind and will is combined with the human mind and will; thus the utterances of the man are the word of God.-”Sel. Messages Book 1 p.21 The man under the influence of the Holy Spirit imbued him with thoughts. God sees to it through the Holy Spirit that what the author writes came from God.

January 31, Inspiration et.al. a. Literary Assistants i. Biblical Prophets and writer - Jeremiah’s literary assistant Baruch wrote parts of God’s message entrusted to the Prophet Jeremiah. Paul, also, the author of numerous letters to churches has literary assistant.

January 31, 2009 ii. EG White – “As the work grew, others assisted me in the preparation of matter for publication. After my husband's death, faithful helpers joined me, who labored untiringly in the work of copying the testimonies and preparing articles for publication. “ {1SM 50.3}

January 31, 2009 b. Copies from extra-biblical sources – Luke wrote from what he learned from others through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. So is, EG White admitted having copied and used portions of book from different authors.

January 31, 2009 C. Contemplate on these words: 1. “... In these letters which I write, in the testimonies I bear, I am presenting to you that which the Lord has presented to me. I do not write one article in the paper, expressing merely my own ideas. They are what God has opened before me in vision—the precious rays of light shining from the throne.”—Ellen G. White, Selected Messages, book 1, p. 27.

January 31, Because God loves us so very much, He wants to give us all the help we need to live in a close relationship with Him. This includes the Bible and all its prophecies and the Spirit of Prophecy written by Ellen G. White. He also will speak directly to us through His Holy Spirit, if we only will listen. However, there will be times we may wrestle in our understanding of the Bible or the Spirit of Prophecy.

January 31, 2009 When this happens, what should we do? What guidelines can we follow to resolve conflicts? Consider the following ideas: a. Pray for God’s enlightenment. b. Consider the principle involved. c. Consider the time and place of the writing and the writer’s culture.

January 31, 2009 d. Discuss your findings with other Christians whom you respect spiritually. e. Wait on the Lord to reveal the answer

January 31, 2009 God Bless and a Happy Sabbath! MARANATHA!
