Staff Development

What’s Cooking Your family (group) just inherited a successful restaurant from Chef Charlie, a long lost relative. The only problem: Charlie was very disorganized. The only recipes you have found are on torn strips of paper. You have to make sense of it all and quickly! The restaurant is opening tonight, and you have to have the food ready. 1.Each member of the group will be given part of recipe (an ingredient, instruction, etc.). 2.Your job is to put yourselves in order as quickly as possible. Your recipe must make sense. 3.When your group is done, loudly announce “bon appetite” to signal the end of the game.

Jesus and the Apostles Throughout the gospels you see Jesus spending the majority of his time with the apostles. The main reason: he knew his ministry on earth would be short and he needed to prepare the apostles to take over his leadership role when he went to the right hand of the Father. Jesus used many different methods to prepare the apostles for their upcoming leadership responsibilities. E.g. Jesus used many object lessons.

In addition to using object lessons, list three other ways that Jesus developed the apostles. 1.________________________________________________________ 2.________________________________________________________ 3.________________________________________________________ In what similar ways have you been developed?

The Seven Essentials of Staff Development

1. Recruitment Look for people who: share our passion for evangelism and discipleship desire to work with youth like to have fun

2. Screening Have them fill out an application that includes: Story of how they came to know Christ Three work and character references Recommendation by pastor Criminal background check Agreement to statement of faith

3. Placement Match their ministry interests with the available staffing needs using: Spiritual Gift affirmation protocol Other assessment tools

4. Orientation Conduct an orientation that includes the YFC: Values Mission Philosophy of ministry Ethos Have them complete the Staff Credentialing Manual on their own

5. Supervision Create a detailed position description Create Key Result Areas (KRAs) and Standards of Performance (SOPs) Establish a regular schedule for reviewing SOPs

6. Coaching/Mentoring Establish a coaching relationship between staff and a trained coach Proceed through the recommended CoachNet programme

7. Training The priority of training can be addressed by: The regular review of staff training needs The provision of training opportunities The evaluation of any training provided

Discussion Questions Often training comes to mind when a person thinks about development. The Seven Essentials of Staff Development includes only one essential that involves training. What elements of the six other essentials are important in developing staff? How are the seven essentials demonstrated in your ministry? What are two things that you can implement from these essentials that will improve your staff development?

Three Training Principles

1. Identification of Training Needs Identify the skills and abilities necessary for your program to achieve its goals Use the green light system to determine the skill level of your staff and board Enhance/develop the identified red and amber skills and abilities

Discussion Questions What training is currently occurring in your ministry? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the current training? If no training takes place, why not?

2. Develop Staff Competencies YFCI has identified seven essential competencies for staff development: 1.Theological Foundations 2.Responsibility to self, family, staff and community 3.Evangelism (3Story Evangelism) 4.Financial and time management

2. Develop Staff Competencies (cont’d) 5.Up-to-date information on the population-in- focus 6.Ministry skills required for their specific role 7.Relationship skills
