Background information This is an overview of fertilizer statistics in Tanzania for the past four years Analysis are based on official trade data (official imports and official exports) from Tanzania Revenue Authority In this overview, more emphasis is given to the year 2013 which is the immediate past year and each analysis is based on the products with higher quantities.

Production There is production of Ground Rock Phosphate and MAZAO (NP + S) from Minjingu Mines and Fertilizer Limited There is also production of lime fertilizers in Tanzania, we don’t have the quantities of production over the years Source: MINJINGU MINES & FERTILISER LTD.
Imports In the year 2013, the most officially imported fertilizer to Tanzania was Urea Looking at the trend of imports from 2010 to 2013, Urea has always been the most imported fertilizer But in 2011, DAP imports were higher than urea Source: TRA Other Fertilizers includes products like; MAP, SOP, MOP, Potassium nitrate, TSP, etc
Exports Source: TRA In 2013, NPK complex fertilizers (NPK ) were the most exported fertilizers All the NPK were exported to Rwanda However, the highest quantities of agricultural products exported over the years was in 2010 NPK (Unknown Grade) refers to NPK fertilizers that their grades are not known. Other Fertilizers includes products like; SOP, MOP, MAP, CAN, Potassium nitrate, etc
Fertilizer origins and destinations This graph shows the top 10 countries that Tanzania imported fertilizers from for the year 2013 and the quantities (MT) that were imported. This graph shows the top 5 countries that fertilizers from Tanzania were exported to and their quantities(MT) that were exported for the year 2013 Source: TRA
Utilization In Tanzania, most Ammonium Nitrate imported are used by the mining industries. Other products like urea can be used for both agriculture or industrial purpose depending on the importers The table above shows the quantities and percentages of imports and their usage. Source: TRA
Consumption [Apparent] At the moment, we are yet to get actual consumption of fertilizers in Tanzania, therefore, all available consumption are apparent. In 2013, the total apparent consumption of fertilizers was 403,857mt Comparing the total apparent consumption of fertilizers over the years, consumption in 2010 was the lowest whiles consumption in 2013 was the highest. NPK analysis Of all the N, P 2 O 5 and K 2 O complex fertilizers, NPK with known grades accounted for 91% of all NPK complex fertilizers imported to Tanzania in 2013 Source: TRA Trend of NPK fertilizers officially imported to Tanzania for the past four years NPK (Unknown Grade) refers to NPK fertilizers with their grades that are not known.
NPK analysis – top various grades of NPK, NP, NK or PK have been officially listed but 6 are accounting for 89% of all imported complex fertilizers with NPK S + 0.1B being the most imported complex fertilizer from Finland. Source: TRA
Total NPK Volumes(MT) and Values(TZS) Imported in 2013 This table shows the volumes and average values of complex fertilizers officially imported to Tanzania in the year 2013 The total quantities imported were 81,572mt amounting to 40,964,000 USD Source: TRA, Exchange rate source: (oanda.com Time Period: 1/1/2013 to 31/1/2013) Tanzania=1,551.5/US$

Comments / Suggestions IMPORTS DATA REQUIRING FURTHER CLARIFICATIONS 98% of products officially imported have been fully verified (HS Code, Product Name, Grade, etc) Only 2% of official imports require further clarification. The most common is NPK’s with grades unknown and NPK ; if it has micronutrients and if the micronutrients are the same as NPK S + 0.1B (which was the top imported complex fertilizer) MAIN IMPORTED PRODUCTS REQUIRING FUTHER CLARIFICATION
Other Comments/ Suggestions Note: COUNTRYSTAT Fertilizer Technical Working Group must check that NPK is actually not the same as NPK S + 0.1B. This product alone accounts for 6.9% of the problems identified. Although the HS code is linked to the basic description, Good description is also needed to verify a products usage, grade, etc. Some of the Good descriptions have blanks; in those cases HS codes and Importer names were used to determine the product. All the blank descriptions should be checked and clarified. About 4,548 tons of products (NPK unknown grade) couldn't be described and identified. This represents however less than 10% of the total NPK imported to the country, and less than 2% of the total volumes imported.
