Bangladesh: Slums By Joel Ng, Shawn Cheng, Marcus Laang and Hayden Chan Class 2i2

● Bangladesh is the most densely populated large country in the world ● Its population is estimated to be over 160 million ● In its capital city Dhaka, over 26% of people are below poverty line ● 40% of population living are estimated to be living in some 5000 urban slums of 17.6 million people Dhaka ● Dhaka’s largest slum, Korail has around residents ● Mass influx of immigrants, almost 2000 daily ● Many of these immigrants are climate change refugees, for example, monsoons may destroy the farms of farmers and they are forced to seek refuge in Dhaka. Background Info

● As most of the slums are on private land, people have to pay a sum for rent, approximately $20 a month, many of the do not earn much ● The wells in the slums are not deep enough to avoid contamination from nearby soil and sewer pipes. When water is available, it usually isn’t clean ● This could lead to many water borne diseases such as Cholera and Amebiasis. Social Problems

● A clinic that treats such illnesses receive approximately 100,000 people a year, according to an interview ● The people living in the slums are also at risk of natural disasters as their houses are rather flimsy Social Problems

● When the slums get overcrowded there is also rampant overpopulation and land pollution as well as water pollution which will become a common problem. ● Real toilets, sinks, and showers are not available to the slum-dwellers so they take care of their personal needs at any place that is available. ● The people are more susceptible to diseases due to the poor sanitation. Environmental Problems

● The dhaka water and sewage authority have agreed to link public water systems to the slums but only if water bills were paid. ● International organisations are setting up water pump stations across the slums to provide clean water to the slums. ● International centre for diarrheal research provides health care services to those who have contracted water-borne diseases. ● Initiatives taken since 1993 to improve the slum conditions Solutions provided
