Slide 6 “Disability” in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities  Article 1: “Persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others”.  The Convention definition of “Disability” constitutes a new foundation for Accessibility Rights by:  Abandoning the traditional “medical” definition of disability exclusively focused on a person’s impairment  Establishing the “social” definition of disability which results from the interaction between persons with impairments and attitudinal and environmental barriers  Affirming that the full and effective participation of disabled persons in society can only occur if those barriers are removed

Slide 7 Accessibility in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Preamble (v): “ Recognizing the importance of accessibility to the physical, social, economic and cultural environment, to health and education and to information and communication, in enabling persons with disabilities to fully enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms”.
