Slide 6 “Disability” in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities  Article 1: “Persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others”.  The Convention definition of “Disability” constitutes a new foundation for Accessibility Rights by:  Abandoning the traditional “medical” definition of disability exclusively focused on a person’s impairment  Establishing the “social” definition of disability which results from the interaction between persons with impairments and attitudinal and environmental barriers  Affirming that the full and effective participation of disabled persons in society can only occur if those barriers are removed
