 Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA ) is the oldest and largest organization in the United States.  "Meals On Wheels“ and World War II.  Meals On Wheels in America in the 1950s.  Today the United States has a vast network of local home-delivered and congregate meal programs that serve millions of seniors and others across the country.  MOWAA is regulated by the Older Americans Act of  One free meal per day for seniors older than 60

 Provides a quality meal to senior citizens.  There are currently 5,000 senior nutrition programs in the United States.  These programs provide well over 1 million meals per year to seniors.  MOWAA is run by a virtual army of volunteers numbering between 800,000 and 1.7 million individuals, this makes up one of the largest volunteer armies in the nation.

 Our local chapter was first established in  In 2010, local MOWAA served 42,000 meals to seniors. Which averages out to about people per day.  meals are distributed daily on the delivery routes.  Any extra food is frozen and distributed on weekends for supplemental meals.

 An assessment is done by a MOWAA representative to determine if they are eligible.  Must be home-bound (cannot drive or walk far)  Must be older than 60  MOWAA serves all of Cache Valley – from Avon to the Idaho border.

 Congregate meals are served at the Senior Citizen Center from noon – 1 pm Monday- Friday.  Meals are $2.50 – or whatever you can pay.  This is regulated by the Older Americans Act.  A small breakfast is also provided if needed.  Breakfast is served from 9:30 to 10 am.

 Word of mouth  Hospital, home care, doctors etc.  Radio, newspaper How long are MOWAA services?  Short term: bone breakages, medical issues. The seniors will get meals for 6 weeks, then the situation will be re-assessed.  Long term: hip replacement, major surgery, too frail to care for themselves again.

 When meal planning they try to make sure that each meal provides 33.3% of daily nutritional needs for seniors.  The food is prepared and packaged for delivery in the facility by individuals with food handler permits.  Participants have a monthly menu calendar so they can pick which meals they get for the day.  Some seniors receive two meals on the weekends if opportunity allows.
