EARTH SCIENCE Chapter 1

Remind 101  Take this free time to take out your cell phone and sign up for remind 101.  Please be reminded that standard text messaging rates will apply. I do not use this site often but do use it to keep you informed of classroom assignments.

Warm Up 1. List 5 rules in which Mr. Lambert would like for you to follow. 2. What is Mr. Lambert’s webpage address? 3. What is the school tardy policy? (Give a brief summary of this.)

Activity Objective – Discuss with partner and determine the following; What is Earth Science? Why do we study Earth Science? How: Make a list with the person sitting next to you write down all of the items that you think include and make up earth science.

What is Earth Science?  Earth Science is the name for the group of sciences that deals with Earth and its neighbors.  Geology  Astronomy  Oceanography  Meteorology

Geology  Geology – “study of the earth”  Two different areas of geology  Physical Geology  Historical geology

Astronomy  Astronomy – is the study of the universe.

Oceanography  Oceanography - is the study of the composition and movements of seawater.

Meteorology  Meteorology - is the study of the atmosphere.

Special Branches  Environmental Science – the study of how humans interact with the environment.  Ecology – the study of living organisms and their nonliving environment.  Geochemistry – combines the study of geology and chemistry. Ex. Geochemist study the composition of rocks.

Special Branches cont.  Physical geographers – study the surface of the earth.  Cartographers – make maps of the surfaces studied by physical geographers.

Spheres of the Earth  Geosphere – all of the solid Earth.  Hydrosphere – all of Earth’s water.  Atmosphere – all of the gases surrounding the Earth.  Biosphere – all living organisms on Earth.

Homework/Classwork 1. Think about how all the spheres of the Earth are connected. 2. Compile a list of objects that exist in each of the earth’s spheres. 3. Pick one item from each of the 4 spheres. Describe how the other spheres would be different if you removed one (not all 4) item completely.
