Welcome to Music All basic things to know for beginner violinists, violists, and pianists

Violin supplies Rent a violin from a local music shop (prices will vary). Rosin (usually comes with violin, and is very cheap for most brands). Shoulder rest (about dollars, also found in music stores).

Viola Supplies Rent a viola from a local music shop (prices will vary). Rosin (usually comes with violin, and is very cheap for most brands). Shoulder rest (about dollars, also found in music stores).

Piano supplies Not much is needed, but you will most likely want to buy a piano or keyboard for home (prices will vary much more than they do for violins and violas, also keep in mind that your private lessons will already have a piano for you).

All instruments The similarities between violins and violas are quite a large amount. They are held the same way and played the same, although the music is read differently and they have different strings. Private lessons for all three instruments can be held at local music companies (not stores) or are often done individually with a teacher at their house or yours. If you play piano and they host the lessons at your house then you will need a piano (not a keyboard).

Dedication You will most likely begin with a 30 minute lesson once a week. Daily practice at home will be necessary. I do advise that you look into your schedule to make room for practice (more time needed as you progress). Different teachers will charge different rates, so please do make sure you find a price that you will be able to continuously afford.
