THEME STATEMENTTHESIS STATEMENT

THEME STATEMENTTHESIS STATEMENT The truth is an essential quality in a strong parent-child relationship. In the movie Into the Wild, director Sean Penn demonstrates that the truth is an essential quality in a strong- parent child relationship through the characters of Chris, and Carine, and it is also shown through my own personal experience with my own parents.

The truth is an important quality. GENERAL

TOPIC The truth is an important quality. In a parent-child relationship perhaps there is nothing more important than the truth. The truth can strengthen such a relationship; however, if absent it can cause tremendous emotional pain.

This is the situation in the movie Into the Wild for the main character Chris McCandless struggles to come to terms with the choices his parents made. The McCandless’ decision to hide the truth from their children, Chris and Carine, significantly affected them. The movie focuses primarily upon Chris who chooses to leave home, abandoning all material possession, and seek happiness in his own way. PLOT

Carine: “I think it was one of the reasons Chris and I were close. We learned to count on each other when Mom and Dad weren’t getting along.” POINT ~ QUOTATION ~ COMMENT Carine McCandless’ remark that “we learned to count on each other when Mom and Dad weren’t getting along” suggests that the family dynamic was anything but stable and yet brother and sister remained close because they were truthful with one another about their lives.
