Professional Certification in Ergonomics/Human Factors/User Experience

What is BCPE? An independent, nonprofit organization established in 1990 for the purpose of credentialing Human Factors/Ergonomics/User Experience Professionals. Governed by a Board of elected professionals and managed by an Executive Administrator and Financial/Information Systems Manager.

BCPE Mission To provide ergonomics certification to protect the public, the profession, and its professionals by assuring standards of competency and advocating the value of certification.

Certification Process Education Experience Examination

Identifies the subject categories, topics and hours of coursework and professional experience required. Distinguishes two different career paths: Human Factors/Ergonomics/User Experience Professional and Ergonomics Associate Professional.

The Ergonomist Formation Model A.Ergonomics Principles 1. Ergonomics Approach 2. Systems Theory B.Human Characteristics 1. Anatomy, Demographics and Physiology 2. Human Psychology 3. Social and Organizational Aspects 4. Physical Environments C. Work Analysis and Measurement 1. Statistics and Experimental Design 2. Computation and Information Technology

The Ergonomist Formation Model C. Work Analysis and Measurement Continued 3. Instrumentation 4. Methods of Measurement and Investigation 5. Work Analysis D. People and Technology 1. Technology 2. Human Reliability 3. Health, Safety and Well-Being 4. Training and Instruction 5. Occupational Hygiene 6. Workplace Design***

The Ergonomist Formation Model D. People and Technology Continued 7. Information Design*** 8. Work Organization Design*** E. Applications (projects pursued by the individual during education/training) F. Professional Issues (ethics, practice standards, marketing, business practice, legal liabilities) *** CPEs must be competent in at least one design domain

CPE/CHFP/CUXP Certification Criteria 1.Master’s degree or equivalent in human factors/ ergonomics or a closely related field. 2.Three (3) years full-time professional practice in human factors/ergonomics. One (1) year of work experience equivalency is granted to graduates of a recognized HF/E PhD program. 3.Passing score on the CPE/CHFP/CUXP written examination. Graduates of a HF/E program accredited by an IEA Federated Society (e.g., HFES, IEHF) are not required to take Part I of the exam.

AEP/AHFP/AUXP Certification Criteria (Effective November 1, 2011) Meets the educational requirement for CPE/CHFP/ CUXP certification. Completes and submits an approved AEP/AHFP/AUXP application. Is working toward fulfilling the CPE/CHFP/CUXP requirement of three (3) years full-time professional practice. One (1) year of work experience equivalency is granted to graduates of a recognized HF/E PhD program. * Graduates of an IEA Federated Society (e.g., HFES or the IEHF) HF/E program complete a shortened application form and pay a reduced application processing fee.

WHY CERTIFICATION (CONTINUED) Contribute to developing the reputation of the field. Personal satisfaction of achieving peer recognition for one’s qualifications. Professional satisfaction through career enhancements, including immediate recognition of one’s knowledge, skills, and abilities by potential employers; increased job responsibility; more variety in job duties and responsibilities; promotion; and/or increased pay.

WHY BCPE CERTIFICATION BCPE received accreditation for the CPE and CHFP credentials from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). BCPE is a member of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE formerly NOCA). BCPE is recognized by the International Ergonomics Association (IEA) as an accredited ergonomics certification organization. Maintains a reciprocity agreement with CREE, the Centre for Registration of European Ergonomists. Recognized by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) as the premier certifying body for the human factors/ergonomics/user experience profession.
