Social Studies Standard Geographic Understandings Georgia First Grade Social Studies Standard Geographic Understandings SS1G3 The student will Locate major topographical features of the earth’s surface. c. Identify and describe landforms (mountains, deserts, valleys, plains, plateaus, and coasts).

Introduction EQ: What kinds of landforms are on the Earth? You are a geographer from planet Russom. You have been sent to Earth by Mrs. Day to find the following landforms on the Earth’s surface: mountains, deserts, valleys, plains, plateaus, and coast.

Click here for a movie about landforms

Task Look out the window of your spaceship to see the different kinds of landforms. You will create and label a topographical map of five different landforms using salt dough.

Process You will be creating a salt dough model of Georgia Landforms. We will make salt dough together in small groups. Using a paper plate as the base, you will be creating a model to show what a mountain, valley, plain, plateau, desert, and coast look like. Once the model is dry, you will use green and blue paint to show the land and the water.

A mountain is land that is higher than the land around it Mountains A mountain is land that is higher than the land around it http://www.discoveryeducation.com

A desert is a hot, dry place with little or no plants

A valley is a low place between mountains.

A plain is a large flat, area of land.

Plateau A high, flat area of land.

The land next to the ocean. Coast The land next to the ocean.

Conclusion Congratulations! You have completed your task for your leader, Mrs. Day, from planet Russom. She will now understand what landforms are on Earth!
