Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology. Definitions  Anatomy- the structure of body parts (also called morphology)  Physiology- the function of body.
NUTRIENT CYCLES Nutrients are chemicals that organisms need to survive. Example – All organisms need Nitrogen to make protein NUTRIENTS must be RECYCLED.
"Excuse me, are you alive?".
IF SOMETHING IS ALIVE IT MUST CARRY ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES IN ORDER TO STAY ALIVE. THESE ARE THE LIFE PROCESSES. Life Processes.
Do Now – Write Down Entire Question and Answers All life depends on the availability of usable energy. This energy is released when (1) organisms convert.

Life Processes Ms. Chicherchia. Nutrition – -nutrients: substances that an organism needs for energy, growth, repair, maintenance. -autotroph: organism.
Nutrition – the process by which organisms take in food and break it down so if can be used for metabolism. -nutrients: substances that an organism needs.
What is Biology? BIOLOGY the study of living things.
Living things Where plants and animals align. What’s alive  We are surrounded by living and non- living things.  All animals and plants are living things.
Cellular Respiration Unit 3. Cell Growth Review 1.Cells grow and divide by mitosis and meiosis (more cells made).  In order to grow and do work, cells.

Living Things Biology is the study of life or living things Another name for a living thing is an Organism.
Classification of living things. What makes living things different from non-living things? From the picture: 1. List 3 different living things 2. List.
1 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration. 2  Photosynthesis is the anabolic pathway in which light energy from the sun is converted to chemical energy.
All living organisms need to take substances from their environment to obtain energy, to grow and to stay healthy.
FIRST FIVE Silently on a separate piece of paper answer the following: 1.What is your preferred method of note-taking? 2.Do you find it beneficial? 3.Have.

ClickBiology There are 7 characteristics of living organisms: Movement Respiration Sensitivity Growth Reproduction Excretion Nutrition

ClickBiology Movement A change of position or place.

ClickBiology Respiration A chemical process in which oxygen is used to release energy from sugar molecules. Sugar (C 6 H 12 O 6 ) reacts with oxygen (O 2 ) to form Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), water (H 2 O) and ENERGY

ClickBiology Sensitivity The ability to detect or sense changes in the environment (stimuli) and to make responses.

ClickBiology Growth A permanent increase in size by increasing cell number or cell size or both.

ClickBiology Reproduction The process that makes more of the same kind of organism

ClickBiology Excretion The removal of toxic materials, waste products and excess substances from an organism

ClickBiology Nutrition The process in which nutrients are taken into the body and converted into simpler substances used for energy, growth and tissue repair.

ClickBiology Summary Movement Respiration Sensitivity Growth Reproduction Excretion Nutrition

ClickBiology Quiz Guess which characteristic is being demonstrated by the following animations:

ClickBiology Question 1: Excretion

ClickBiology Question 2: Nutrition

ClickBiology Question 3: Movement

ClickBiology Question 4: Reproduction

ClickBiology Question 5: Which two characteristics are shown by this animation: Sensitivity and Movement

ClickBiology Question 6: Other than movement, which characteristics are shown by this animation: Sensitivity and Nutrition

ClickBiology Question 7: So far you should have named a total of five different characteristics. However there are 7 characteristics in total. Name the two remaining characteristics. Growth and Respiration
