SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) Proposed in/by US House of Representatives to end online piracy (or at least make it more difficult) Online piracy is the downloading of ‘intellectual property’ or copyrighted material in any form (music, movies, games, graphics, books, etc.) How? Court orders would limit access to foreign websites ‘dedicated to theft’ Cut off U.S.-based payment processing for those websites Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.9 SOPA

In Reality The bill would limit access to a huge number of websites that the average internet user visits on a regular basis ISPs would be forced to monitor all internet traffic, and most anonymity would be gone As it stands now, most ISPs passively monitor what you are doing. PIPA (Protect IP) Proposed in/by the U.S. Senate Like SOPA, it focuses on international websites that are ‘dedicated’ to piracy and allows the government to block access to those sites The only ‘big’ difference is that PIPA does not include provisions that would inhibit technology growth Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.11

Why are the bills such a big deal? Example You and your best friend record yourselves lip- syncing to your favorite song. The video is funny, so you upload it to a video-hosting website.
