Roman numerals AND HOW THEY WORK BY: AVERY COLEMAN

How they originated Roman Numerals started in Rome. People don’t really don’t know when they started, but we sure know they started a long time ago. There are tons of different theories about them.

NUMBER one Number one is really simple. All it is is a I. I bet you can remember that.

Other numbers Some letters stand for their own numbers. For example, V stands for 5 and L stands for 50. Some letters stand for their own numbers. For example, V stands for 5 and L stands for 50.

Addition Roman Numerals uses addition. 1+1 is 2 right? So II = 2. And it’s the exact same thing for 3 except there is 3 Is in a row. Roman Numerals uses addition. 1+1 is 2 right? So II = 2. And it’s the exact same thing for 3 except there is 3 Is in a row.

Big addition You can add bigger numbers together too. For example, 86 is LXXXVI ( ) Can you guess what 173 is in Roman Numerals? You can add bigger numbers together too. For example, 86 is LXXXVI ( ) Can you guess what 173 is in Roman Numerals?

What is 173? If you thought that 173 was CLXXIII then draw a smiley face on your scoring sheet. If you thought that 173 was CLXXIII then draw a smiley face on your scoring sheet.

subtraction Roman Numerals use subtraction, too. For example, 4 is IV. That means 1 less than 5. If you are going to subtract, you always would put the lower numeral first. Can you guess what 444 is in Roman Numerals? Roman Numerals use subtraction, too. For example, 4 is IV. That means 1 less than 5. If you are going to subtract, you always would put the lower numeral first. Can you guess what 444 is in Roman Numerals?

What is 444? If you guessed that 444 is CDXLIV, then you are correct! If you got this right, then please put a star on your scoring sheet. If you guessed that 444 is CDXLIV, then you are correct! If you got this right, then please put a star on your scoring sheet.
