Percent Proportion EQ: How are proportions used to solve percent problems?

What is a percent? –A special ratio comparing a number to 100 Example: 25 = 25% 100

What is a proportion? An equation involving two equivalent ratios

Putting it Together A percent proportion is simply - a proportion where one of the ratios is a percent

How does it work? In most cases, the proportion will not be set up for you to solve. You will have to create the percent proportion from a statement. That ’ s right…. You will have to change words to symbols.

What is 20% of 800? To create a percent proportion, follow the framework of:

Breakdown: What is 20% of 800? Put in the percent. Which one is it? The one with the % sign!

Breakdown: What is 20% of 800? Now look at the key words… IS and OF. 800 is next to of…so substitute it for OF.

Breakdown: What is 20% of 800? There is no number next to the word is (20% is the percent). This is what you need to find.

Breakdown: What is 20% of 800? Cross multiply and solve:

Example #2 240 is what percent of 600? What ’ s different? –This time we don ’ t have the percent What ’ s the same? –The manner in which we solve. Break it down…

Breakdown: 240 is what percent of 600? Look at the key words…. is and of 240 “ is ” and 600 “ of ”

Breakdown: 240 is what percent of 600? Cross multiply and solve

Try a few… 12 is 24% of what number? What is 54% of 900? 170 is what percent of 680?
