Mr. Jay Semester 1

 You may remember me…  Moved to LHS in Sept from MPMS  Why leave?  Happy to teach Nat. Dis.  Science: the process of figuring stuff out

 Not your typical science course…  Semester elective- your child wants to be here  Cannot remove the human component- similar to Envi. Sci.

  WHY?  What is the science behind these events?  WHEN?  When do they occur? Can these be predicted? If so, how?  HOW?  How does society cope with these catastrophes? How do we prepare for future events? 3 Themes of Natural Disasters

  Earth Science  Geology  Seismology  Volcanology  Meteorology  Engineering and Physics  Design  Structures  Environmental Science  Are humans influencing natural disasters?  Climate Change Interdisciplinary

  From Within: Geological Disasters  Earthquakes  Volcanoes  Tsunamis  Unit Project  From Above: Meteorological Disasters  Storms and Floods  Tornadoes  Hurricanes  Unit Project Units of Study

  Everything we do in class = 75%  Case studies  Labs and classwork  Reading checks  Mini-projects  Quizzes  Unit Projects = 25%  No TESTS, but quizzes after subunits  No HW except for text reading and/or work that cannot be completed during allotted class time Grading Policy

  Individual, not group  Choose an event that occurred w/in the last century  Detailed report in the form of a: poster, brochure, or powerpoint presentation  Grading Rubric posted and available  Oral presentation is NOT part of the grade  Plagiarizing will earn a 0. Unit Project
