10/20/18 59 John Dewey was born in Burlington, Vermont Dewey graduated from the University of Vermont with Bachelor’s Degree in philosophy.

1884 Wrote The New Psychology and got doctorate from John Hopkins University of Chicago appointed Dewey head of the department of Philosophy.

Opened an elementary school that would serve as the "Laboratory School" for the education department 1896 My Pedagogic Creed was published and presented his educational theories. 1897

Elected President of American Psychology Association 1899 The School and Society was published as an elaboration on his educational theories. 1900

 - Like Montessori, Dewey believed students should be educated through their experiences, "experiential education" - Dewey believed that children had a say in their education, and the classroom should be set up to demonstrate a democratic society. - Dewey was a humanist, and strongly believed that students already had an internal idea of what is right and what is wrong, and that students had the ability to give themselves self-evaluations. (Rather than formal grades given by an instructor

 Disadvantages of Dewey's theories is: -Students lose sight of who is in charge if they have too much of a say in what goes on in a classroom. - Students will fail to learn basic academic skills if they are far too in charge of their education - Some were very critical of his humanistic approaches to education, that students have yet to develop the capabilities to evaluate themselves, and know what's right from wrong.

Democracy and Education was published, Dewey states in order that all people may be allowed the opportunity to expand their capacities for growth they would have to live in a democratic society Experience and Education was published he believed that students thrive in an environment where they are allowed to experience and interact with the curriculum. The Child and the Curriculum continues the argument that education and learning are social and interactive processes

June John Dewey Died at the age of 92 He died of pneumonia while living in New York City.

“Failure is instructive. The person who really thinks learns quite as much from his failures as from his successes.” –John Dewey
