Presentation transcript:

Color is an element of art that is derived from (comes from) reflected light. You see color because light waves are reflected from objects to your eyes. White light from the sun is actually a combination of all colors.

COLOR SPECTRUM Prism White Light Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Violet When light passes through a wedge-shaped glass, called a prism, the beam of white light is bent and separated into bands of color, called the color spectrum.

Color Wheel Violet Blue Violet Blue Blue Green Green Yellow Green Yellow Yellow Orange Orange Red Orange Red Red Violet A color wheel is a color spectrum bent into a circle. A color wheel shows us how colors are related. They remind artists how to mix and think about colors.

COLOR PROPERTIES HUE VALUE INTENSITY We will look closer at the properties later in this course

YellowRedBlue PRIMARY COLORSPRIMARY COLORS

Primary colors cannot be made from other colors. Artists create all the other colors of the rainbow by mixing together the primary colors.

OrangeVioletGreen SECONDARYSECONDARY

Each secondary color is made from the two primary colors closest to it on the color wheel.

Yellow OrangeRed OrangeRed VioletBlue VioletBlue GreenYellow Green INTERMEDIATEINTERMEDIATE

The intermediate colors are the "two-name colors" yellow orange, red orange, red violet, blue violet, blue green, and yellow green. They are made from combining 2 primary colors or a primary and a secondary. The name of the hue always begins with the primary color.

That’s the end of this simple look at Color. We will explore Color and paint mixing in depth later in this course.

the darkness or lightness of an object.

Medium High Value Medium Value Medium Low Value Low Value High Value Value depends on how much light a surface reflects. Not all hues of the spectrum have the same value.

NEUTRALS Black reflects no wavelengths of light. White reflects all wavelengths of light.Gray reflects all wavelengths of light equally but only partially. Neutrals include black and white as well as all the grays between them.

HUE SHADETINT A light value of a hue is called a tint and a dark value of a hue is called a shade. You can change the value of any hue by adding black or white.

TINTTINT A light value of a hue made by mixing the hue with white. Opposite of shade. Pink is a tint of the hue red Purple is a tint of the hue violet.

A dark value of a hue made by adding black to it. Opposite of tint. Navy is a shade of blue. SHADESHADE

That’s the end of this simple look at Value. Add Value key words and phrases to your Mind Map.
