Introduction to Driving

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF DRIVER EDUCATION?

DRIVERS EDUCATION  Designed to help unlicensed or inexperienced drivers.  Completing the course does not mean the end of your education.

Is being allowed to drive a right or a privilege?

DRIVING IS A PRIVILEGE!!!  Driving is a privilege, not a right!  A privilege granted to those who meet certain requirements and obligations.  A license can be restricted, suspended, or even revoked for committing various driving offenses.

DRIVING IS A RESPONSIBILITY  Responsible for your driving  Financial responsibilities  Maintenance

New Jersey Driver License System Chapter 1

CARRY THE PROPER PAPER WORK! Special Learners Permit. Your Parents need to carry their license. Vehicle Registration Decal – Must display a decal on the front and rear license plate of the vehicle you are driving. Obtain the decals when you get your permit. Insurance coverage – As soon as you receive your Special Learners Permit, have your parents notify the insurance company. Make sure you have the proper coverage.

Student learner's permit (minimum six months of supervised driving) Probationary license (minimum one year of restricted but unsupervised driving) Basic driver license (must be 18 years old)

Pass the knowledge test Enroll in a behind-the-wheel driver training course through a commercial driving Pass the vision test Bring in 6 points of identification.

Display a reflectorized decal on each license plate. Parent(s), guardian(s) or dependent(s) are allowed as passengers. A dependent is a permit or probationary driver's child, not siblings Only one additional passenger is allowed unless accompanied by a parent or guardian You can't use cell phones, hand held video games or any other hands-free interactive, wireless communication device. Seat belts must be worn at all times.

You must be at least 17 years of age Complete the supervised driving period Pass the 6 Point ID Verification Pass MVC's road test You must return after one year from date of issue to get a basic driver license.

Display a reflectorized decal on each license, $4 per pair. No driving after 11:01 p.m. and before 5:00 a.m. Parent(s), guardian(s) or dependent(s) are allowed as passengers. A dependent is a permit or probationary driver's child, not siblings.

Only one additional passenger is allowed unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. You can't use cell phones, hand held video games or any other hands-free interactive, wireless communication device. Seat belts must be worn at all times.

Motorist must carry a legible certification to indicate this need from his/her employer or religious official on the official letterhead of the business, organization, or religious institution, with a signature of the certifying official and his/her name, title, address, and phone number.

Failure to do so may result in a fine of $100 or a possible suspension of a motorist’s driving priviledge.

Screening Test Minimum Requirements Eyesight Written Health Basic license applicants: 20/50 vision with or without corrective lenses. For sight in one eye only, that eye must meet the 20/50 rule and the applicant must have documentation signed by a licensed physician. 80 Percent, or 40 of the 50 questions, must have correct answers Inform examiner of health problems.

 You may schedule your initial road test online.  A safety specialist will accompany you while driving in an off-road testing area or on a public road course  The test will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes

 The same identification you used to obtain a permit. (6 Pts. ID & Address Verification)  Valid examination permit  An accompanying licensed driver  License plate decals.

Vehicle cannot have a center console unless the emergency brake is accessible from the passenger seat. Examiner must be able to reach either the foot brake or parking brake.  A registered vehicle with current inspection sticker and insurance card. The examiner will give you an authorization slip in addition to your permit to get your license at an MVC Agency.

You must wait at least two weeks before taking the test again. If you fail more than twice, MVC may require you to wait six months before taking the road test again.

 It is deemed unsafe or unsuitable for a road test  It has an improper, expired, or no inspection sticker  Equipment in the vehicle prevents the examiner from reaching the foot or parking brakes  There is a defect or condition that affects the safe operation of the vehicle including poor brakes, a defective parking brake, unsafe tires, unreasonably unclean interior, a fast engine idle or missing seatbelts
