American Quarter Horse By: Ainsley

Quater horses originated in the late 1700's. They were brought to the southeast United States by Spanish conquistadors. They were fast, running at speeds of up to 55 miles per hour. They were used for horse racing on the quarter mile track. That is where they received the name quarter miler, or quarter horse. HISTORY

In the 1800's, the quarter horse was the choice of cowboys for use in cattle round up. They became the horses the cowboys used for their everyday activities on their cattle ranches.

Through the years, the quarter horse breed has been in demand for calf roping, barrel racing and rodeo riding.

Quarter horse foals grow up to be between 14 and 16 hands, or about 5 feet tall. DESCRIPTION

Quarter horses can be solid colors, roans, palominos, greys, grullos, buckskins or duns. They can various markings such as, stars circles, moons, stockings, strips and blazes.

The quarter horse has a small, short and refined head, straight profile, broad chest and powerful hindquarters.

Their calm and gentle temperament makes them a great horse for beginning riders. CHARACTERISTICS

Many stud owners have became wealthy and famous from the quarter horse's breeding ability. It is one of the most popular breeds with a population of about 3.2 million.

This is my one year old quarter horse named Moonlight. I received him for my tenth birthday. When he is two years old, we will train him to be ridden. He is my best friend!
