Linear Functions Finding Parallel & Perpendicular Lines Using Slope

Interactive Notebook Go to the next right page in your notebook. We should be around page 39 or 41.

Essential Question How can you determine whether one line is parallel or perpendicular of another line?

Today I will learn… To determine if two lines are parallel, perpendicular or neither. To write the equation of a line that passes through a point and is parallel or perpendicular to a given line.

TAPE TO YOUR RIGHT SIDE

IN THE BOX DESIGNATED FOR PARALLEL LINES… Draw a picture of two parallel lines

IN THE BOX DESIGNATED FOR NEITHER… Draw a picture of two lines that are neither parallel nor perpendicular

Notes for: (On the inside right side of foldable) PARALLEL LINES Have the same slope Have different y- intercepts Never intersect Ex. Double yellow lines on the road

Notes for: (On the inside right side of foldable) PERPENDICULAR The slopes are negative reciprocals of each other (the product of the slopes is -1) Intersect to form a 90 degree angle Ex: a telephone pole

Notes for: (On the inside right side of foldable) NEITHER Lines that intersect but do not form a right angle and/or are neither parallel nor perpendicular Ex. Lines on a field

On the inside of the foldable, on the left side Give an example of two equations that are parallel Two equations that are perpendicular Two equations that are neither parallel nor perpendicular

Problems: write below foldable Example Problem SlopeParallel SlopePerpendicular Slope y=mx+bmm-
