Forensics Beyond reality CSI Effect Forensics Beyond reality

Definition of CSI Effect CSI Effect is the unrealistic expectation by jurors, resulting from TV shows that irrefutable forensics evidence will be available in every case.

Expectations resulting from csi Effect Presence of Physical evidence such as DNA, blood, fingerprint, etc in criminal cases Quick and conclusive results when analyzing evidence Advanced technology and well equipped labs Super science (being able to peel back retina of a victim and seeing reflection of suspect)

CSI Effect on Judicial System Higher rate of acquittal More expert witnesses are needed A source of elimination when selecting juries Criminals are becoming more forensics savvy resulting in less physical evidence being left behind at crime scene

Positive results of the CSI Effect Jurors are asking more probing questions and are less willing to wrongly convict Technology is being driven by what is portrayed on TV Increase public awareness and interest in crime solving

What Is Forensics As you watch the video document Definition of forensics science Major roles of forensic scientist Three distinct branches of forensic science and the description of each

Myth vs Reality of Forensics From the reading, list the myths/incorrect techniques and the truth/correct procedure. As a student of forensics, why is it important to identify the myths portrayed on tv shows?
