This Week’s Topic: How do I write the major essay? Introduction Going over your Body Paragraphs Conclusion

Major Essay – What’s the Point?? The major essays allow you to express your opinion on a variety of topics: Grade 10: Globalization Grade 11: Nationalism Grade 12: Liberalism

Major Essay - Outline Introduction Paraphrase the source Identify and develop an ideology in the source Transition to other ideologies by bringing up contrasting characteristics Use the other ideologies to develop contrast Write your thesis Body Paragraphs Argument Lead-In Evidence Conclusion Re-state your thesis

Introduction Outline: The introduction is where you explore the topic of globalization, explore what the source’s perspective is on globalization, and state your opinion on globalization. Outline: Paragraph 1: Paraphrasing the source and identifying its ideology (pro/anti-globalization) “In the source, the author says …” Paragraph 2: Discussing the definition of globalization and the characteristics associated with the source’s ideology If the source is pro-globalization, talk about the characteristics of pro-globalization If the source is anti-globalization, talk about the characteristics of anti-globalization Paragraph 3: Discussing the characteristics associated with the opposite ideology Paragraph 4: Your thesis Your response to the question and the source’s perspective

Introduction Paragraph 1: Paraphrasing the Source Why do we have this paragraph? The question asks, “To what extent should the ideology reflected in the source be embraced?” To answer this question, you must demonstrate that you understand the ideology in the source! We do this by paraphrasing… saying the source in different words… Example 1 Source: “People hoped that economic globalization would act like a rising tide that lifts all boats. Instead, it has been a riptide that has knocked over the weakest boats.”  Paraphrased: “In the source, the author says that globalization is a riptide that creates disparity – it lifts the strong and knocks over the weak. While people had hoped that globalization would be a positive force, the author explains that, in reality, it has been a negative force. Thus, it is clear that the author is reflecting an anti-globalization perspective.

Introduction Paragraph 1: Paraphrasing the Source Example 2 Source: “Globalization, as defined by the rich, is a very nice thing... you are talking about the Internet, you are talking about cell phones, you are talking about computers. However, these things do not benefit – and even destroy – two-thirds of the people of the world.”  Paraphrased: “In the source, the author says that globalization is a good thing for the rich, but not the poor people that make up the majority of the world. Thus, it is clear that the author is reflecting an anti-globalization perspective.

Introduction PRACTICE Paragraph 1: Paraphrasing the Source Source: “This is a very exciting time in the world of information. It's not just that the personal computer has come along as a great tool. The whole pace of business is moving faster. Globalization is forcing companies to do things in new ways.” Paraphrased: “In the source, the author says …. Thus, it is clear that the author is reflecting a/an …. perspective.

It is forcing companies to move faster and explore new ways of doing things. Thus, it is clear that the author is reflecting a pro-globalization perspective.

It's not just that the personal computer has come along as a great tool. The whole pace of business is moving faster. Globalization is forcing companies to do things in new ways.” If this was our source… would we talk about pro-globalization characteristics or anti-globalization characteristics in Paragraph 2?

Introduction Globalization: The process by which the world’s citizens are becoming increasingly connected and interdependent.

(pull from your body paragraphs) (pull from your body paragraphs) Introduction Characteristics of Pro-Globalization (pull from your body paragraphs) Promotes interconnectedness – allows people to travel, moves people and ideas Can create economic benefits Can encourage cultural diversity & revitalization through greater access to foreign cultures Encourages governments and organizations to work together Allows countries to specialize in what they are good at (outsourcing) Characteristics of Anti-Globalization (pull from your body paragraphs) Encourages interconnectedness – which can encourage the spread of diseases Can create economic destruction Can discourage diversity, and promote assimilation/homogenization Encourages outsourcing, which may lead to job loss and low wages for workers Can increase demand for goods, which can lead to environmental and social exploitation.

Introduction Paragraph 2 Example Source: “People hoped that economic globalization would act like a rising tide that lifts all boats. Instead, it has been a riptide that has knocked over the weakest boats.” Ideology in Source: Anti-Globalization Will talk about the Characteristics of: Anti-Globalization

Introduction Paragraph 2 Example In the source, the author says that globalization is a riptide that creates disparity – it lifts the strong and knocks over the weak. While people had hoped that globalization would be a positive force, the author explains that, in reality, it has been a negative force. Thus, it is clear that the author is reflecting an anti-globalization perspective. Globalization can be defined as the process by which the world’s citizens are becoming increasingly connected and interdependent. While it has positive and negative characteristics, the source is speaking specifically about its negative characteristics. These may include globalization’s ability to spread diseases, create economic destruction, and discourage diversity. Similarly, it may create job loss and low wages for workers, and lead to environmental and social exploitation.

Introduction Paragraph 2 Example Source: “This is a very exciting time in the world of information. It's not just that the personal computer has come along as a great tool. The whole pace of business is moving faster. Globalization is forcing companies to do things in new ways.” Ideology in Source: Pro-Globalization Will talk about the Characteristics of: Pro-Globalization

Introduction Paragraph 2 Example “In the source, the author says that globalization is creating an exciting time in the world of information. It is forcing companies to move faster and explore new ways of doing things. Thus, it is clear that the author is reflecting a pro-globalization perspective. Globalization can be defined as the process by which the world’s citizens are becoming increasingly connected and interdependent. While it has positive and negative characteristics, the source is speaking specifically about its positive characteristics. These may include globalization’s ability to promote interconnectedness, allow people to travel, and move ideas around the globe. Similarly, it may create economic benefits, promote cultural diversity, encourage governments and organizations to work together, and it may allow countries to specialize in what they are good at doing.

Introduction Paragraph 2 PRACTICE Source: “Globalization, as defined by the rich, is a very nice thing... you are talking about the Internet, you are talking about cell phones, you are talking about computers. Introduction Paragraph 3: Example However, despite the negative characteristics of globalization associated with the source’s perspective, globalization also has many positive characteristics. These positive characteristics may include globalization’s ability to promote interconnectedness, allow people to travel, and move ideas around the globe. Similarly, it may create economic benefits, promote cultural diversity, encourage governments and organizations to work together, and it may allow countries to specialize in what they are good at doing.

Introduction Paragraph 4: Thesis Your response to the question and the source’s perspective Question: “To what extent should the ideology reflected in the source be embraced?” Thesis: After exploring globalization’s positive and negative characteristics, it is clear that the ideology of _____globalization, as reflected in the source, should be embraced _______. This is because of globalization’s ability to __________, ____________, and _____________. (The three characteristics you will explore in your three body paragraphs). Thus, the ideology of _____globalization, as reflected in the source, should be embraced__________.

Introduction Paragraph 4: Thesis Your response to the question and the source’s perspective Question: “To what extent should the ideology reflected in the source be embraced?” Thesis Example : After exploring globalization’s positive and negative characteristics, it is clear that the ideology of anti-globalization, as reflected in the source, should be fully embraced. This is because of globalization’s ability to spread diseases, create economic destruction, and discourage diversity. Thus, the ideology of anti-globalization, as reflected in the source, should be embraced fully embraced.

Introduction Paragraph 4: Thesis Your response to the question and the source’s perspective Question: “To what extent should the ideology reflected in the source be embraced?” Thesis Example : After exploring globalization’s positive and negative characteristics, it is clear that the ideology of anti-globalization, as reflected in the source, should be moderately embraced. This is because of globalization’s ability to spread diseases, create economic destruction; and yet its ability to also encourage governments and organizations to work together, Thus, the ideology of anti-globalization, as reflected in the source, should be embraced only moderately.

Introduction Paragraph 4: Thesis Your response to the question and the source’s perspective Question: “To what extent should the ideology reflected in the source be embraced?” Thesis Example : After exploring globalization’s positive and negative characteristics, it is clear that the ideology of anti-globalization, as reflected in the source, should be minimally embraced. This is because of globalization’s ability to promote cultural diversity, encourage governments and organizations to work together, and allow countries to specialize in what they are good at doing. Thus, the ideology of anti-globalization, as reflected in the source, should be minimally embraced.
