6.P.1.1
Work silently at your desk (homework, reading, drawing, etc). Sit in assigned seats. No Talking
Earlier this year we studied how waves carry energy. List the 2 types of waves we learned about and describe how we used a slinky to learn more about each wave type. Brainstorm first, then construct your sentences.
Vibrations: create waves Carries energy which transfers (spreads) the energy away from the source.
This Brain Pop video will teach you! ce/energy/waves/ ce/energy/waves/
On the wave you drew, label: Wavelength Crest Trough Amplitude Rest position Frequency
Wavelength- the space between two identical parts of a wave – from a crest to a crest, or a trough to a trough.
Trough- the bottom or lowest part of a wave, which happens every wavelength.
Crest- the top or peak of a wave. Crests occur every wavelength.
Amplitude- the height of the wave. Shows the energy of the wave
Frequency- the number of times a wave passes a point in one second How fast the wave is moving
Light waves, and waves in the water are transverse Light waves are present in a vacuum like outer space
How to remember- Rock thrown in a pond The Wave at a sports event Travelling=Transverse waves up/down left/right
Transverse wave- with a slinky! Let’s pick my assistant Here is the demo. I will hold the slinky in the rest or equilibrium position. My assistant will move it to the left and to the right. Up and down.
The Wave! I will show you how we’ll do the wave. We are just like a wave as the energy moves down the line. When I point to you react accordingly.
1 st wave- Move our hand a few inches up and down. 2 nd wave-Move our arms up and down 3rd wave-Move our whole bodies and arms up and down
2 Crests 10 Troughs
Sound waves, and seismic earthquake waves are longitudinal. These waves can not move through a vacuum in space.
Seismic Waves: waves of energy that travel through the Earth's layers Seismic Waves: Example: earthquakes nce/Earthquakes/Fixed.htm nce/Earthquakes/Fixed.htm
Electromagnetic waves = waves which can travel through the vacuum of outer space. Mechanical waves = require the presence of a material medium in order to transport their energy from one location to another. Write EVERYTHING on this slide…
