News Questioning and Writing Activity. Mrs. Hill – Journalism Come in, sit down where you can see the board, and have paper and a writing utensil ready to go!

Sometimes…  When you are reporting on news you only get bits of information as they come to you. Meaning, you need to work with the information you have until other tips and facts come in to the newsroom. This happened more than you think, so that is the skill we are going to practice today.

Rules to this activity:  1. You must not talk during the activity, until the questioning part.  2. You must take notes about the information you are receiving (this will count as a grade).  3. At the end, you will get 5 minutes to come up with questions you want to ask the tip giver (Mrs. Hill).  4. The questions you ask may only be close-ended questions (“yes” or “no” questions). Only questions about the FACTS will be answered.  5. Once you think you have the story, you are going to write a 100 word press release! (This will be graded as well.) You will only get 15 minutes to write the story.  6. At the end of the activity, some of you may read your stories. Finally, Mrs. Hill will tell you the actual story that is happening and we can see how close you are. You will be given time to revise your story before the period is up.

Your first piece of the story… This audio will not be repeated. You will have 5 minutes to write down your notes and questions before you are given the next piece of the story.

Your second piece of the story…  You have 5 minutes to look at this photo, take notes, and write your questions down before you are given the last piece of your story.

Your third piece of the story…  The date below is the final piece of your story. Take notes and come up with any questions you have. NOVEMBER 8, 2015

What next?  You now have 5 minutes to write down any questions you might have, make sure they can be answered in simply “yes” or “no” answers.  You may only ask questions about the FACTS. No making assumptions!  If you want your question answered, raise your hand.

Time to write!  You may now ask Mrs. Hill ANY questions you have regarding this story. One at a time and you MUST raise your hand.  You have 15 minutes to write your story.  Story needs to be a minimum of 100 words.  Make sure you mention as many of the 5Ws as possible.  Worth 30 points total (20 for story, 10 for notes).

THE ACTUAL STORY!  Who – Mrs. Hill and her hubby!  What – ARE HAVING A BABY!  Where – In Florida!  When – November 8, 2015  Why – Babies are cute

Revising your story  You may now ask Mrs. Hill ANY questions you have regarding this story. One at a time and you MUST raise your hand.  You will now have time to revise and update your story.  Due at the end of class.
