Name: Form: Tech group: Smart Materials Situation: Smart Materials react to the world around them without need for human intervention – for example they can change colour in sunlight, with heat, with moisture etc. Success criteria Peer assessment Teacher assessment 4c Identified a Smart Material and designed a fabric toy using this material. 4b The design has a clear use and would be suitable for use a toy. 4a Has also labelled their design clearly. 5c Has also added colour to their design and filled out the evaluation section of the sheet. 5b Has also shown creativity in their interpretation of their research. 5a Has also included research in to children's fabric toys (1 a4 page). 6c Has labelled work in detail and presented diagram and sketches in a neat and professional way. 6b+ Has produced a unique and original design You should hand in… Challenge: You have been asked to design a new children's fabric toy, which uses Smart Materials in the design or decoration. Your final design should have a clear target market, use 1 or more Smart Materials and must be fun, creative and interactive. Your research (what fabric toys are currently available) Your design (coloured and labelled clearly, explaining how each feature works) Evaluation (written in full sentences)

Some ideas to get you going... Smart Materials Photochromic Phosphorescent Thermochomic With phosphorescent materials, the pigments absorb light, which then glow in darkness. This is often used on the hands of a watch (so you can see the time in the dark). Here you can see how the picture of the owl changes in darkness. With thermochromic pigments the colour changes when in contact with heat, so the mug changes to reveal a different design when the hot drink is poured in, the t-shirt and phone change with the heat of a hand, and the pan changes colour/ design when it gets up to the desired temperature. Some example fabric toys… Remember to research your own source of inspiration! With photochromic materials, the pigments change colour when exposed to UV light – this can be seen in the models dress (which changes colour) and the t- shirt design. UV light can also be shone from torches or lights.
