Corpus Christi de Ysleta Established: 1682 Problems: Lack of support from Spain Lasting Results: 1 st permanent settlement of Europeans in TX Located a few miles from present-day El Paso

The French… 1682 – La Salle sails down & claims the Mississippi River for France – La Salle & colonists built Fort St. Louis in Texas. 1 st threat from France.

San Francisco de los Tejas Established: 1690, by Father Massanet Problems: Drought ruined crops Disease killed Indians & Friars Indians rejected Catholic religion & Spanish attempts to change their way of life. France not a threat and mission cost too much money.

San Francisco de los Tejas Lasting Results: 1 st attempt to settle East Texas. Mission failed & Indians blamed Spanish for their problems. Spaniards realized that a mission needed presidios & Spanish families. Back to Map
