Canis lupus familiaris* Siberian Husky Scientific name: Canis lupus familiaris* * We found that there is no scientific name for Siberian Husky, so we are using the scientific name for dog.

Where do they live? Siberian Huskys live primarily with people in cold climates. They originated in the area of Siberia, Russia, a very cold area with lots of snow. In 1909 they were brought to Alaska.

How does a Siberian husky survive the cold winter? A Siberian Husky has fur. It has 2 layers of warm fur. The inner layer helps to protect the skin from the harsh Arctic snowy winters. In the summer, the outer layer of fur shields the animal from the harsh sun by reflecting the heat. It also has well-furred toes and strong claws that make it great for digging snow holes, which provide it with protection from strong winds.

What does it eat? They eat a high protein diet of meat and bones. They were bred to pull sleds so they are work dogs and need high protein diet to stay healthy.

3 Interesting Facts about Siberian Huskys: They were bred as sled dogs, to pull sleds with food, water, supplies, and people over heavy snow. In 1925, a group of Huskies saved Nome, Alaska. Teams of Huskies mushed through a blizzard to bring medicine that was needed to end a disease outbreak. Balto, the lead dog, has a statue in one of New York City’s parks. Their howl can be heard as far as 10 miles away.
