Online Searching, 4 th ed. Chapter 6 Web of Science Search Example 1: A Topic Search (“acid rain and forest*”) pp. 116 – 118 Librarian’s Guide to Cultivating Database Skills for Research and Instruction

Beyond the Textbook moment Depending on your institution’s Web of Science subscription, you may need to change the “All Databases” option to just the “Web of Science Core Collection” option to more closely replicate the searches in the textbook.

Set this – and which Citation Index… And now you’re ready to set up the rest of your Topic search:

Changing this… changes the input field to a “pick from a list” function Annnnd… search!

The preceding steps are, of course, pretty well documented in the textbook. Here are some actual screensnips from the results page not shown (or shown only schematically) in the text:

Beyond the Textbook moment As noted in the textbook (pp ), another way to get at the “US” aspect would be to Refine by the Organizations the researchers are affiliated with. Going beyond the suggestions in the text, we could also select the “Cary Institute” as shown below… Which nets us: (complete details of our search echoed back to us)

Returning to the progression in the textbook… Likens still leads the least of “greatest number” of articles… does “prolific” correlate with “most frequently cited”? Let’s find out

In this case, that would be a “Yes” - ! Not only the most frequent writer on this topic, but one of his articles is the most frequently cited (the count has increased from 539 to 553 just between the time I was working on the new edition and the time of creating this slide show) Psst – the Analyze Results feature is really quite fascinating and very easy to use. Give it a click and try some of the options.
