Pinhole Camera Science Fair Project By: Hana’a S. Farha

Background Research In the late Middle Ages, the pinhole was used to study projection of light through a small aperture. It was later used in the 16th century for astronomy to observe and study solar eclipses. Pinhole cameras were used for nuclear physics in the 1940’s. The countless abilities of the pinhole all go back to light or science. (The History of Photography, 2001)

The definition of photography is ‘the process or art of producing images of objects on sensitized surfaces by the chemical action of light or of other forms of radiant energy.’ (Company, Dictionary, 1996) Photo diffraction gives you pictures of a pinhole camera. The pinhole is an image-forming device. It had a role on evolution. Pinhole photography is lensless photography. The lens is changed with a small hole. When light passes through the small hole, a picture is made.

You can change the design You can change the design. It can be small, large, decorated, made from a match box, or even made from an empty coca-cola can. The possibilities are endless. The many ways to make it are different. The many sizes and decorations are different. At the end they take pictures and are amazing creations. (The History of Photography, 2001)

Purpose The purpose of this project is to see if I can create a pinhole camera with common house hold resources.

Hypothesis If I use two cans of Arizona and a digital camera, then I can make a digital pinhole camera.

Materials 2 cans of Arizona (any flavor) Scissors Glue (any kind) Digital Camera Memory Camera Ruler (inches)

Variables Independent: Camera Dependent: The Pictures Controlled: Size for the Lens

Procedure Grab two Arizona cans and empty them out Puncture hole into top and bottom can, then cut them off Locate Nutrition facts on can, then cut line straight through the middle Cut a 13 x 6 cm sheet from each can(size may vary depending on size of camera) Glue sheets together (6 cm side) Poke a small hole over where lens will go to create the digital effect of the camera ( equal to or smaller than size of unsharpened pencil front) Stick camera in there Take two pieces of the Arizona can that are 13 x 4 cm and cut little slits on the sides Fold little slits then fit them into the top and bottom of camera (Keep in mind you may be removing the top to turn camera on and off DO NOT glue top)

Quantitative Data

Results The Results of this project are a hypothesis proven true. You can make a pinhole camera with 2 Arizona cans.

Conclusion In conclusion, you can make a pinhole camera with two Arizona cans and a digital camera.

And I will never do science fair again  Thank You And I will never do science fair again 
