“The number [of dropout factories] declined by 583 or 29 percent between 2002 and Nearly 1.1 million fewer students attended dropout factories in 2011 than in 2002.” — PBS NewsHour

TURNAROUND SCHOOLS:  The U.S. Department of Education’s School Improvement Grant program provides funding to state educational agencies that, in turn, make competitive sub-grants to districts.  Districts must demonstrate a great need for support and a strong commitment to use funds to substantially raise the achievement of students in their lowest-performing schools. 4 WHAT IS A TURNAROUND SCHOOL?

TURNAROUND SCHOOLS  School Improvement Grants (SIG) are helping to change the odds for students.  On average, proficiency rates in schools receiving support from the SIG program have increased in both math and reading. – 39 percent of schools demonstrated gains of 10 percentage points or more in math – 30 percent of schools demonstrated gains of 10 percentage points or more in reading REFORMS AT WORK 5

SUPPORTING TURNAROUND SCHOOLS:  The School Turnaround AmeriCorps program is a collaborative effort to increase high school graduation, college readiness, and educational attainment for students in our nation’s persistently lowest- achieving schools.  The $15 million initiative represents a partnership between the U.S. Department of Education and the Corporation for National and Community Service. 6 A FEDERAL PARTNERSHIP

TURNAROUND SCHOOLS:  As a recipient of federal School Improvement Grant funds, Kit Carson College Preparatory Academy in Clark County, Nevada has focused on improving student achievement through several avenues, including: – Extended learning time, – Improved professional development, and – Outreach to parents.  After the first year of turnaround efforts, Kit Carson now has more parent volunteers, and the attendance rate at parent-teacher conferences has increased from 75 percent in to 98 percent in SNAPSHOT FROM THE FIELD: SIGNS OF PROGRESS
